What is Deep Work

"Professional activities performed in a state of distraction-free concentration that push your cognitive capabilities to their limit. These efforts create new value, improve your skill, and are hard to replicate" — Cal Newport

Deep Work to me is the ability to be able to work for a large period of time without any distractions. My work routine typically involves 4-6 hours of Deep Work including breaks. The main idea is that you are focusing for a long period of time without getting distracted. That's the core idea blocking distractions and putting your entire focus on that one specific task. The reason this works so well is that, all you care about is that one task. If I happen to go on my phone or watch a video my distrcation and dopamine will increase. Then, when I return to my task it will feel much slower and the cycle begins. This is procrastinating and it's the thing we all hate. However, to avoid procrastinating you apply Deep Work. As, if you apply Deep Work for say 2-4 hours you will theoretically get more progress done then procrastinating and going on your devices.

Why I apply Deep Work

Applying Deep Work has changed the way I view my work and homework. I've been able to focus for long periods of time without the need of going on my devices. The real reason to why I applied goes back to my first semester of College. In my first semester, my time management was terrible. I would stay up till 4 in the morning completing my homework that was due late. It wasn't until I saw study with me videos on Youtube; seeing other students at the time studying for several hours without the need of going on their devices motivated me. However, with my phone habits I felt that doing something like that was near impossible. It wasn't until I tried it myself doing my homework for an hour without any distractions. It wasn't until I tried that I saw progress I've made. The fact that if I put in my entire focus into a specific task I can be able to finish it quicker than if I would to procrasinate that same task. Applying Deep Work has given me more free time to build projects and sites like these. I'm a big believer that every student should apply this and reason why I create a blog for this. To show others that procrastinating will only make you more stressed out and applying Deep Work can make that task quicker to complete.
